A driver was transported to a local hospital Friday evening after being run over by his own vehicle.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. when the driver was pulling out at 2228 Jefferson Street, according to Lt. Rick Cary of the Bluefield Fire Department. The driver was transported to Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Patrolman J.W. Murray of the Bluefield Police Department said the driver was transported soon after he arrived on the scene. The driver’s name and condition were not immediately available.
It was not known whether the driver fell out due to a faulty door on his Pontiac or whether he tried to jump out when the vehicle’s brakes failed, Murray said. The vehicle rolled completely over the driver when it started rolling backward, downhill, toward College Avenue. It hit another vehicle and a mailbox before rolling into a front yard at 2220 Jefferson Street and coming to rest against some bushes.
The cause of the accident was still under investigation Friday evening, Murray said.
