One dies in 3-vehicle crash

TAZEWELL, Va. — A Tazewell, Va., woman was dead at the scene of a three-vehicle wreck Saturday afternoon in the Gratton area of Tazewell County, but the accident remained under investigation on Sunday, according to Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt.

“We are investigating the wreck, but we have also called in an accident recreation specialist from the Virginia State Police to help us with our investigation,” Hieatt said. “So far, our investigation indicates that there were two collisions, and the driver who was fatally injured was in the second collision.”

Hieatt said that the victim was Debra Taylor, 54, a resident of the Gratton, Va., area.

“There were four people in the other two vehicles involved, and all four of them were transported to Tazewell Community Hospital, but none of them appeared to be seriously injured,” Hieatt said.

Hieatt said that Tazewell County 911 received the first call on the wreck at 1:10 p.m. A state police dispatcher said Sunday afternoon that Tazewell County requested an accident reconstructionist on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., to respond to a three-vehicle collision with one fatality. The state police dispatcher said the accident reconstruction expert was on the scene until after 4 p.m.

The wreck was on Route 61, west of Tazewell town limits.

Hieatt confirmed that it was raining in Tazewell County on Saturday afternoon, but did not speculate on the cause of the wreck. “We’re waiting for the report of the state police accident reconstructionist before we can proceed,” Hieatt said. He added that as of Sunday afternoon, “no charges have been made,” he said.
