The Bluefield Board of Directors approved the first reading Tuesday of an ordinance that would ban new pit bulls from the city limits.
The motion was challenged by Blaine Braithwaite, a concerned citizen, who said he had spoken with three attorneys who advised a public hearing must be held before the board can take action on the proposed ordinance.
The proposed ordinance has already prompted a debate in the community, with concerned animal owners packing recent city council meetings. However, it has spurred current pit bull owners to have their animals registered with the Bluefield Police Department, as required by existing city code. More than 30 pit bulls have currently been registered with the city.
