Community prayer vigil for Tammie Toler tonight at Princeton City Hall

PRINCETON — The family of Tammie Toler, a well known Mercer County newspaper editor, columnist and reporter, say they appreciate all of the prayers that the community has lifted up this week.

“We appreciate all of the prayers,” Connie Toler said Wednesday during a telephone interview from the Roanoke, Va., hospital where her daughter has been since Saturday. She said that she was aware of the prayer vigil that is scheduled at 8 p.m. tonight at Princeton City Hall. “I’m not going to be able to attend, but my sister will be there,” Connie Toler said.

Tammie Toler, editor and general manager of the Princeton Times was transported to Roanoke on Saturday night after suffering a stroke. Word of Tammie’s medical challenges rapidly spread through the community, and friends asked local churches to pray for her. When Deborah Clay heard the prayer request at church on Sunday, she said that, “the Lord just laid it on my heart to organize a prayer vigil for her,” Clay said.

“I don’t know Tammie,” Clay said. “I just wanted to do something for Tammie and her family. I have prayed for her since I first heard. I’m going to have a table set up and some get well cards that people can sign. Anybody there can sign a card for her.

“Tammie’s aunt told me that her favorite song is ‘Victory in Jesus.’ I have printed out the lyrics for that song so we can all sing it together,” Clay said. “The local police and fire departments are going to put their lights on and we’re all going to sing ‘Amazing Grace’ together.

“Prayer is very powerful,” Clay said. “My husband, Pastor Kenneth Clay, will open the service with prayer. We’re all praying for Tammie’s recovery.”

Clay said that everyone is invited to attend and offer prayer.
