Little Jimmie campaign gets quick start on raising party funds

BLUEFIELD — An anonymous donation Sunday of $2,500 helped to keep the momentum rolling for the Communi-ty Christmas Tree.

The campaign launched with a $10,000 donation from Phipps Mineral Holdings Ltd of Corpus Christi, Texas. The anonymous $2,500 donation from “For Terri — she loved her children!” brings this year’s campaign total to date to $13,075. Sponsored by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, the 2013 campaign goal is $30,000.

Last week’s donation of $10,000 from Phipps Mineral Holdings Ltd — and Sunday’s donation of $2,500 — marks the first time in known memory that the Little Jimmie campaign has launched with two significant donations during the first two days of the campaign. The Little Jimmie campaign is now entering its 96th year of operation.

Despite the great start, this year’s campaign is still $16,925 short of its goal.

This year’s Little Jimmie party will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the city auditorium on Stadium Drive in Bluefield. As in year’s past, plans call for giving each child a red bag filled with two toys — selected especially for each individual child — food, treats, a book, toboggan, a pair of gloves and other goodies.

More than 428 children were already registered last week during the first sign-up period for the Little Jimmie party. A second round of sign-ups will be held on Friday, Dec. 6, from 3 to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Bluefield City Auditorium.

Children — newborns to age 12 — can be signed up. Parents or legal guardians are required to bring their child’s birth certificate or WIC card.

Help is needed to meet this year’s goal. Those who would like to contribute to the Community Christmas Tree program can mail donations to: Bluefield Daily Telegraph, c/o Community Christmas Tree, P.O. Box 1599, Bluefield, WV, 24701; or drop them off at the Daily Telegraph office. Checks should be made payable to the Community Christmas Tree Fund.
