Two airlifted following 2-vehicle crash on Route 460

BLUEFIELD — Eastbound lanes of U.S. Route 460 was closed for more than half an hour Wednesday evening after a two-vehicle crash was reported east of the Mercer Mall.

The incident was reported at approximately 7:50 p.m. The Green Fire Department was dispatched to the scene and eastbound traffic was stopped.

Trooper J.M. Pack of the West Virginia State Police Princeton detachment said later that a pickup truck traveling east lost control, went into the median and rolled. One of the truck’s tires came off and struck a passing vehicle, causing its air bag to deploy.

The driver of the pickup truck was ejected, and he landed in the median, Pack said. It could not be determined whether the truck’s driver was wearing his seat belt.

Both the truck’s driver and the female driver of the other vehicle were transported to Bluefield Regional Medical Center to be flown by helicopter to another facility. Pack did not know which hospital outside the region would be their destination.

Trooper J.C. Tubert is the investigating officer.

Traffic began moving again after 8:30 p.m.
