Feds return child porn indictment

BILL ARCHER — A Mercer County man who was arrested in August on charges of possessing and receiving child pornography has been indicted on federal charges related to the investigation.

A federal grand jury meeting in Huntington on Wednesday returned a 1-count indictment naming David A. Punturi, 53, of the Montcalm-Bluewell area alleging that Punturi “did knowingly possess material, that is, computer graphic image files, containing hundreds of images and videos of child pornography,” according to the indictment.

The indictment alleged further that the materials “involved prepubescent minors ... which had been shipped and transported in an affecting interstate and foreign commerce by any means, including by computer.”

In addition to count one of the indictment, the indictment includes a forfeiture count that would require the defendant to, “forfeit to the United States any visual depictions and any books, magazines, periodicals, films, videotapes and other matter which contains such visual depictions” as those mentioned in count 1.

Along with the materials, the forfeiture count includes a “Western Digital Caviar Blue SATA hard drive.

Punturi was arrested on Aug. 14, after Detective Cpl. S.A. Sommers of the West Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force executed a search warrant at Punturi’s residence. At the time of his arrest, Mercer County Sheriff D.B. “Don” Meadows announced in a press release that Punturi was arrested on “109 counts of receiving and possessing material visually portraying a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.”

In addition to Sommers, also a sheriff’s deputy, other members of the ICAC task force, Mercer County sheriff’s deputies, an ICAC investigator from the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office’s Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force participated in the execution of the search warrant.
