Collision claims 3: Two victims transported following Rt. 52 crash

BRAMWELL — Three people were pronounced dead at the scene and two more were transported to a Mercer County hospital following a two-vehicle wreck Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Route 52 north of Bramwell.

At least two crash trucks and three ambulances — all with the Bluefield Rescue Squad — responded to the wreck on a curve about 75 yards north of the Hunk Hollow Road intersection. The Bramwell Police Department, Mercer County Sheriff’s deputies and the Bramwell Volunteer Fire Department responded to the wreck.

Cpl. A.P. Christian of the Princeton Detachment of the West Virginia State Police confirmed that there were three fatalities in the wreck, but did not release any additional details, pending notification of their next of kin. He said that the two people injured in the wreck, “were taken to Bluefield Regional Medical Center,” but he did not speculate as to the severity of their injuries.

“It is still unclear as to how the accident happened,” Christian said. “As of right now, I don’t have IDs on the people who were fatally injured.”

He said the wreck involved a white coup and a full-sized truck that was hauling an equipment trailer. He said that he needed to speak with some witnesses before making a definitive statement as to what took place in the wreck although he speculated that the white coup crossed the center line.

North and southbound traffic was halted on U.S. Route 52 for 90 minutes or more as emergency responders worked to assist the victims. The truck and coup were lodged against the guardrail to the right of the southbound lane. Northbound traffic was backed up almost to Pinnacle Rock and southbound traffic was backed up to almost to Coaldale.
