Rain slick highways lead to violent crash involving vehicle versus coal truck

ENGLISH —  An afternoon rain storm that swept through southern West Virginia Wednesday likely factored into a van versus coal truck wreck on Route 83 near English.

A 21-year-old McDowell County woman whose name has not yet been released was traveling west on Route 83 in the direction of English when she lost control of her 2005 Kia Sedona and slid into the path of a 1996 Kenworth coal truck owned by C-Ray Trucking of Pounding Mill, Va.

“She hit the driver’s side wheels of the truck and spun counter-clockwise into the wheels of the trailer,” Cpl. C.K. Morton of the West Virginia State Police said. “She confirmed it was her fault at the scene.”

Morton did not release the names of either driver involved since the wreck is still under investigation. The truck driver was not injured.

The victim was transported to Welch Community Hospital, then taken via ground transport to Charleston, because helicopters could not fly Wednesday night due to weather, Morton said.
