Republican Mitt Romney wins — at least in the eyes of Tazewell County school kids.

Romney easily won mock elections Monday at both Graham High School and Dudley Primary.

At Graham High School, Romney won by 400 votes followed by 153 for President Barack Obama, according to Tim Woodward, a government teacher at GHS.

Woodward said the mock vote by the students could be a positive indicator for Romney.

“The interesting thing is since 1988 the vote at the school has always predicted what the vote will be (on Election Day),” Woodard said. “Since 1988 our student winner has been the real winner.”

Woodward said all students in grades 9-12 participated in the mock election along with teachers and staff.

“In some of the classrooms that voted all of the votes were for Romney,” Woodward said. “Most of the time it hasn’t been this lopsided. I think a lot of that is based upon what the kids talked about in class, and what they heard about coal and Obama being negative on coal. And a lot of them have parents who are directly employed or have some type of job connected to coal mining.”

Romney also was the winner Monday in a mock election at Dudley Primary where he defeated Obama 227 to 77.
