Two Tazewell cheerleaders appear in Magic Kingdom Christmas parade to air on ABC

TAZEWELL, Va. — While many families will be exchanging presents on Christmas morning, the Oxford family will be glued to the television tube from 10 a.m. until noon on ABC on Wednesday, watching for their two daughters as they perform in the Disney Parks Christmas Parade.

Courtney Oxford, 17, and her sister, Kaitlyn Oxford, 16, a senior and sophomore respectively at Tazewell High School — both members of the THS Cheerleading Squad — attended a cheerleading camp at Roanoke, Va., earned special honors and were selected to audition for the National Cheerleaders Association and National Dance Alliance’s presentation during the Disney Parks Christmas Parade at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World.

“Both of our girls were nominated to audition,” Robyn Oxford said. “Courtney won the sportsmanship honors at the camp and Kaitlyn was named an All-American.” Robyn and David Oxford traveled to Orlando, Fla., with their two daughters, where they stayed at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort from Dec. 5-8.

“The first two days were for rehearsal, and they did the filming on Dec. 7,” Robyn Oxford said. “There are 586 cheerleaders in the event. During the audition, they decided on placement, and both of our girls were put up in the front. You can see them real easy during the parade.”

Oxford said that Neil Patrick Harris of “How I Met Your Mother” and “Doogie Howser, MD” fame, was one of many celebrities who participated in the rehearsal. Harris along with Nick Cannon are the hosts of the program. Other celebrities who will be participating include Mary J. Blige, Ne-Yo, Demi Lovato, Jordin Sparks, “American Idol” season 12 champion, Candice Glover and The Wanted.

“It’s been really, really cool,” Robyn Oxford said. “They had such a great cheerleading team there.”

Participants were selected from cheerleading camps in 36 states. The NCA and NDA held 400 camps nationwide last year, with top qualifiers in several categories receiving invitations to try out.

This is Disney Parks’ 30th annual holiday special, according to information provided by the NCA/NDA.
