Firefighters from the Bluefield Fire Department and Bluefield, Va., Volunteer Fire Department battled a fire of unknown origin at an unoccupied apartment building/business location at the intersection of Stadium Drive and Maryland Avenue in Bluefield this morning.
Firefighters received the call shortly after 4 a.m. “The air was so cold that the smoke was hanging near the ground like a very thick fog,” David Thompson, a firefighter with the Bluefield Fire Department said. “With those conditions, it was difficult to see where the fire was coming from.”
Captain Richard Hodge of the Bluefield Fire Department is in charge of the scene, and was on top of a garage adjacent to the apartment/business structure, and not immediately available for comment. Hodge did comment that it is: “Cold,” he said.
Along with apartments, the building housed a laundromat and trophy shop in the past, but no businesses have been there in recent years.
