Funds still needed to help push Little Jimmie campaign past goal

BLUEFIELD — With only nine days to go before the big party, the Community Christmas Tree is still short of its campaign goal.

Donations Thursday of $800 brought this year’s campaign total to date to $22,608. However, another $7,392 is still needed to meet this year’s goal and to ensure a joyous Christmas for more than 800 area children who would otherwise go without this year.

Sponsored by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, the Community Christmas Tree — also known as the Little Jimmie campaign — provides toys, treats, a book, toboggan, a pair of gloves and other goodies to hundreds of local children in need each year.

As final preparations for the big party begin, a team of volunteer shoppers are preparing to purchase hundreds of toys over the next couple of days at the Bluefield Kmart.

More than 779 children have been registered for the party to date. Organizers expect to serve around 825 children at this year’s party on Saturday, Dec. 21, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at the city auditorium on Stadium Drive in Bluefield. The Bluefield Daily Telegraph will continue to take last-minute referrals of children from other charities and health and human service agencies. It is anticipated that another 40 children or more will be registered for the program in the next few days.

Help is still needed to meet this year’s campaign goal.

Those who would like to contribute to the Community Christmas Tree program can mail donations to: Bluefield Daily Telegraph, c/o Community Christmas Tree, P.O. Box 1599, Bluefield, WV, 24701; or drop them off at the Daily Telegraph office. Checks should be made payable to the Community Christmas Tree Fund.
