New year may rouse Old Man Winter

By CHARLES OWENS
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BLUEFIELD — The year 2008 could be off to a frigid start with accumulating snowfall by tonight.

An approaching blast of arctic air will bring bitterly cold temperatures and snow to Bluefield tonight and Wednesday, Anita Silverman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., said.

“There is a really big area of cold air that is coming in,” Silverman said. “It will be significantly colder all the way through Wednesday. The chance for snow is pretty high especially in the afternoon (today). That will continue Wednesday. Accumulations are more favorable in the mountains. Flat Top will get more snow.”

A low of about 12 degrees is expected for tonight with an 80 percent chance of snow. A daytime high of about 19 degrees is expected for Wednesday. A low of 11 degrees is predicted for Wednesday night.

“Tuesday night will be in the low teens, and then the lows on Wednesday night will be just a couple degrees colder,” Silverman said. “It’s also going to be windy. The wind chills are going to be of course getting much colder. And any place that does have the snowfall will have blowing snow issues.”

The arctic blast will be short lived.

Silverman said temperatures will begin to moderate by the week’s end.

“By the end of the week, it’s back up into the 40s,” Silverman said. “So it’s really just those two days and after that it will begin moderating.”

The extended forecast calls for a high of 43 degrees on Friday and a high of near 50 on Saturday.
