Man waives extradition hearing in I-77 sexual assault case

TAZEWELL, Va. — A Pocahontas, Va., man wanted in West Virginia on a fugitive from justice warrant relating to an alleged sexual assault at a rest stop off Interstate 77 near Camp Creek waived extradition proceedings Wednesday in the General District Court of Tazewell County.
Edward Allen Flick, 48, of Pocahontas, Va., was arrested Saturday, Sept. 5 by Tazewell County deputies, said Lt. L.A. Bailes of the West Virginia State Police Turnpike Division.
“We did have a sexual assault between known parties,” Bailes said.
The alleged assault occurred approximately 10 a.m. Sept. 5 at the 19 Rest Area off the southbound lanes of I-77 near Exit 14 in Mercer County, he said.
The Mercer County woman who was allegedly assaulted and Flick knew each other, Bailes said. The investigating officer, Corporal D.C. Havens, who was not scheduled for duty until midnight, was not available for additional comment. Bailes did not know the circumstances that brought Flick and the woman together.
Havens put out a Be On The Lookout (BOLO) notice with the information he had obtained, Bailes said. Flick was arrested on a fugitive from justice warrant.
Flick waived extradition proceedings Wednesday during a hearing in the General District Court of Tazewell County, according to a clerk with the Tazewell county Circuit Clerk’s Office. His case is continued until Oct. 7. A date for Flick’s return to West Virginia has not been set.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Dennis Lee said people facing extradition to another jurisdiction normally waive the proceedings.
The law enforcement agency seeking the person is then notified so a transfer can be arranged.
