Sheriff substation moving

By GREG JORDAN
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BLUEFIELD — As of July 15, the Mercer County Tax Office, a division of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, will open at its former location in the City of Bluefield Municipal Building.

The tax office at the Brushfork substation will collect taxes through today, then close until it is relocated on July 15. The tax office, which will be across the hall from the Bluefield Sanitary Board, will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed for lunch from 12:00 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Captain Mike Gills of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said the Brushfork office would no longer have deputies after today. Sheriff Don B. Meadows was out of town Wednesday and was not contacted after repeated attempts.

Bluefield Mayor Linda Whalen said the tax office’s return was good news.

“We’re really excited that they’re moving their office back to our city municipal building because it creates traffic in our downtown and it’s just more convenient for the residents of Bluefield,” Whalen said. “We’re thrilled that they made the decision to come back.”

Whalen said the city was notified about the move the day after the Mercer County Commission appointed Meadows to fill the vacancy left when former Sheriff Danny Wills resigned. Besides administering the county’s law enforcement agency, the sheriff is also the county’s treasurer.

The Bluefield location of the Mercer County Tax office will be (304) 327-5311.
