Vinciguerra Jr., Shott move on to general election

By CHARLES OWENS
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

PRINCETON — Democrat Mike Vinciguerra Jr. and Republican John H. Shott will square off this November for the 24th District House of Delegates seat in Mercer County.

With 20 of 20 precincts reporting, Vinciguerra captured the Democratic nomination with 1,544 votes followed by 925 for Harold B. Wolfe III and 285 for Edwin Ray Vanover. Shott won the Republican nomination with 463 votes followed by 101 for Steve Mancini; 77 for Douglas Quesinberry; and 69 for Blaine Braithewaite, according to unofficial returns.

Eustace Frederick, the incumbent 24th District Delegate, didn’t seek re-election.

In the 25th Delegate District contest, five candidates were vying for their party’s nomination for two seats.

With 33 of 33 precincts reporting, former Circuit Court Judge John R. Frazier and incumbent Delegate Marshall Long, D-Mercer, won the Democratic nomination. Frazier netted 4,411 votes and Long garnered 4,088. Democrat Lyle Cottle was a distant third with 1,085 votes.

Incumbent Delegate Mike Porter, R-Mercer, and Republican Joe Ellington, won the Republican nomination. Porter garnered 1,308 votes and Ellington 751.

Voters will choose between Frazier, Long, Porter and Ellington for the two district seats this November.

Two Democrats were vying for a single seat in the 23rd Delegate District contest in McDowell County without a Republican challenger. Incumbent Delegate Clif Moore, D-McDowell, defeated challenger Emily Yeager in the 23rd Delegate District race.

With 42 of 42 precincts reporting, Moore won with 2,331 votes to 1,825 for Yeager.

With 50 of 50 precincts reporting in the 22nd Delegate District, which includes parts of Mercer and McDowell counties and all of Wyoming county, two Democrats were nominated for two seats with no Republican candidates on the ballot.

The winners were Linda Phillips, 3,500 and Daniel Hall, 2,241 votes. Bruce Williams garnered 2,028 votes; incumbent Mike Burdiss, 1,969; Mike Davis, 1,812 and Marty Ashley, 888 votes.

Final election results were released early Wednesday morning by Mercer County Clerk Rudolph Jennings. The election results from Mercer County were delayed late Tuesday following an apparent glitch in the electronic vote counting system. Without numbers from Mercer County, winners in races across the region couldn’t be declared until early Wednesday morning.
