Elections upcoming in towns across Mercer County
By GREG JORDAN
Bluefield Daily Telegraph
BRAMWELL — Another Mercer County township announced its plans and candidates Tuesday for elections in June 2009.
Monday was the filing deadline for elections in the Town of Bramwell, town recorder and chief election officer Carolyn Clark said Tuesday.
Incumbent Mayor Louise Stoker, who is running unopposed on June 9, said she expected to see many of the town’s residents participate as much as they have during previous elections.
“Turnout has been wonderful,” Stoker said. “The percentages have been very high. I think we are running close to 80 percent of our registered voters, and I’m hoping for a turnout like that again this year. It shows that people care.”
Incumbent recorder Carolyn Clark is also running unopposed this year.
Bramwell Town Council members who have filed to run for the five council seats include incumbents Edris Miller, Kelly Murphy Eller and Joe Vinciguerra.
New candidates running for town council include Bill Keller, Joe Miller and Jeff Vance, Clark said.
Incumbent town council members who have chosen not to run for reelection are Katharine Barringer and Jimmie Bishop, Clark said.
The last day to withdraw as a candidate in Bramwell is April 13; the filing fee will be forfeited. The final day for filing as a write-in candidate is April 28.
Voting will take place in Bramwell Town Hall on June 9.
Other Mercer County municipalities have elections schedule in June.
Athens will hold its election June 9. Incumbent Mayor Robert Richardson is running for reelection. Two incumbent council members, Joe Manzo and Paul Hodges, are running for the two council seats along with challenger Rodger McKinley.
The Town of Matoaka will conduct its election June 6. Names of candidates were not available Thursday.
Princeton will hold its election on June 2; city residents can register to vote at the Voter Registration Office at the Mercer County Courthouse until May 12. In Bluefield, the city’s residents will go also to the polls June 2. People who wish to vote must also register at the county courthouse by May 12.
