Spanishburg aide named Service Person of the Year

PRINCETON — PRINCETON — For 33 years, A. Gail Shrewsbury has worked along side educators and students. On April 1, Shrewsbury was honored as the 2014 Service Person of the Year at the Mercer County Schools’ annual service personnel banquet at the Princeton Church of God.

Shrewsbury is a kindergarten instructional aide at Spanishburg School.

Spanishburg Principal Melissa Boothe said Shrewsbury has been at the school for 14 years.

“ ... She and her lead teacher effortlessly team teach Spanishburg kindergarteners all the things they need to know for success in school and in life,” Boothe said.  “Gail Shrewsbury is an outstanding employee who not only does ‘all things kindergarten’ but also assists in the cafeteria, works with parents, volunteers for fundraising, and always lends a helping hand.”

Thirty-two other county employees  — from every school and work site — were honored at the banquet.  All were nominated based on job performance, leadership, and ability to work well with others. Job titles ranged from head cook to instructional aide, bus operator to paint crew foreman.

Shrewsbury didn’t know about the award until she was at the banquet. Superintendent Deborah S. Akers presented 32 plagues before awarding the county title to Shrewsbury.

“I would be proud to have any one of you represent Mercer County,” Akers said, “but the state says we can only nominate one.  Our nominee has worked for the county for 33 years, spends her day in a kindergarten classroom, earned her Paraprofessional Certification in 2002, and works in ‘the burg.’ Can you guess? Yes, it’s Gail Shrewsbury.”

Prior to the dinner, the Princeton High Jazz Band, under the direction of Julia Kade, played jazz standards for the employees and their families.
