Princeton photographer wins Professional Photographers of America National Award

PRINCETON —  Forty-three years ago, Steve Jessee picked up his dad’s camera. A hobby of taking yearbook and newspaper photos eventually turned into a long-lasting career. On Feb. 8, at the Professional Photographers of West Virginia Spring Convention in Morgantown, Jessee was awarded the Professional Photographers of America National Award.

“It is really a great feeling to be recognized by your peers,” Jessee said. “I have been awarded many accolades over the years and I feel the work I have put into each has made me a better photographer.”

Jessee, the owner of Associated Photography in Princeton, also won the A.S.P Highest Print Score Award, Four trophy wins, Artist of the Year award, West Virginia CPP Gold Bar Award, Top Ten Award, Best Digital Retouching Award and four blue ribbon awards.

Even with an established career, Jessee said there is always room to practice his craft.

“I keep growing as a professional photographer by never thinking there is nothing else to learn. I go to programs, watch tutorials and study other photographers’ works to improve on my images,” he said. “I also share my photography knowledge by teaching classes at Concord University. I learn by watching their creativity come alive in their images.”

Jessee enjoys capturing images of the people, places and things that God has put on earth.

“I can see an image that I am getting ready to capture and by applying creative tools and knowledge of photography make it into a work of art,” Jessee said. “As a professional photographer, I have learned that I can capture the history of people, places and things. As we mature, we start looking at the past more. Through my photography, I have been able to record the moments in life that we want to remember. Having a photograph of a family member that is no longer with us brings back lost memories. I am capturing history.”
