Rookie quilter

Teen wins People's Choice award for first quilt

RICHLANDS, Va. — —  In the quilting circle, 16-year-old Lyndsey Boyd, from Rosedale, Va., is a rookie, a beginner in a world filled with stitches and patterns. Despite the learning curve, Boyd is also an award-winning quilter. She won the People’s Choice award at the Appalachian Art Center’s fourth annual quilting challenge.

A student at Lebanon High School, Boyd began quilting at age 14. She was taught by her grandmother Linda Boyd.

“She has always shown me things,” Boyd said. “But this has been easy and relaxing.”

Boyd learned about the challenge from her art teacher Morgan Wallace Gilbert.

“I talked to my family about it and decided it would be something I could do as an after-school project,” Boyd said.

She started working on the Lone Star quilt in September, but took a few breaks. It got frustrating at times.

“I finished in three days, about a week before the contest,” Boyd said.

She was shocked, but overjoyed to learn she had won the People’s Choice Award. Voters selected Boyd’s quilt out of 22 other entries.

According to Sarah Romeo, the director of the Arts Center, Boyd’s quilt was impressive.

“The judges liked the choice of colors and the fact that the quilt was large,” Romeo said.

The challenge was judged by 2013’s winners Julie Powell and Connie Brown.

Romeo said the center was pleased to have Boyd’s entry.

Four years ago, an 8-year-old quilter participated in the challenge. Romeo said it unusual to have a teen or a child enter the challenge.

In addition to quilting, Boyd also knits and crochets. She said  friends don’t understand the hobby, but she encourages them to give it a try.

“I tell them it is a hobby where you can always do new things and express yourself through quilting or anything art related. Also you can pass it down to your kids,” Boyd said.

For now, Boyd enjoys working with her grandmother and learning new skills. She also likes the hobby because it is relaxing and allows her to use math.
