Bluefield Daily Telegraph
I wish to point out some things the letter to the editor in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph on Sept. 12 (‘‘Collect from those who avoid taxes”) didn’t address. The $300,000 uncollected property tax each year would in large part have gone to our schools where it is desperately needed. Also, 1,000 West Virginia vehicles at an average price of $12,000 titled illegally out of West Virginia is another $600,000 in taxes lost by our state. These lost taxes have to be made up by the rest of us in higher taxes.
In three northern West Virginia counties (Marshall, Mineral and Ohio) their residents have spoken out requiring their officials (elected and law enforcement) to enforce these laws. I wonder why we don’t do that in Mercer County?
