Old Smokey Shott asks the question, “Is the Tea Party a serious challenge to the American way of life?” The answer is no. The Tea Party is a challenge to what is left of the Republican Party.
The Tea Party’s radical agenda, cloaked in patriotism, is to take the U.S. back in time to about 1850. The Tea Party has morphed the Republican Party into a “take away” party. They want your Old Age Survivors and Disability Insurance, your Medicare, your Medicaid. They want to provide large corporations with corporate welfare and take from the poor to give to the rich. In short, they want to recreate the old “Robber Baron” economic system. They turn social issues that have nothing to do with government organization or government operation into political issues by scaring people and arousing emotional reactions like “the government wants to kill babies” or “death panels.”
My personal opinion is that the real Republicans will eventually throw the Tea Partiers under the bus and take back their responsibility as the conservative party of rational responsibility. The current so-called Republicans have proved beyond any doubt that they cannot govern.
As my old friend Warren Richardson used to say, “a West Virginian voting for a Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.”
