Bluefield Daily Telegraph
The Wednesday, Sept. 11, edition of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph contained an article by Mr. Bob Redd, “Hardworking bands enhance many sporting events.” Thank you Mr. Redd for the observation you outlined in your article.
I had a wonderful experience watching my son be a member of the Marshall University Marching Thunder drum line. I saw first hand what seemed to be an unlimited number of students audition for a very limited number of positions on the snare line. I will never forget the text message I read from my son the day of the auditions, “end snare, right side!”
I knew then he made one of nine positions available. I then learned of the long practice sessions in preparation for the annual auditions.
Wherever he went, the practice pad was packed with him. I would wait for his text at 4 a.m. assuring he was up and on the bus ready for an away trip. The Saturdays that we spent at the football games were pure joy in anticipation of the band. The band provided some very memorable occasions that meant so much to our entire family.
So thank you Mel Saunders, Bobby Jenks, Jamie Martin, Dr. Ben Miller, Aaron Statler, Trey Aliff and Steven Barnett for making the band such an important part of my life.
