I would like to make several comments about recent news items.
A June “News and Views” asked “... if officials should be allowed to display the Ten Commandments on government property like the Wyoming County Courthouse.” I don’t believe Wyoming officials placed these commandments on the courthouse lawn. I believe it was a citizen’s group that just did it without permission. If I am wrong, I apologize.
A recent letter to the editor made several comments about President Obama, one of which stated, “He has written more executive orders than all the other president’s combined. This is a fact. Look it up.” So I did and Googled “Executive Orders by President Chart,” which is published by the Federal Registrar. It stated presidents G.W Bush issued 291, Clinton issued 329, Bush senior issued 166, Reagan issued 381 and as of their latest count, 2013, Obama has issued 155. I wish she had indicated her source so your readers could see her source for themselves.
Lastly, while I don’t like to point out people for making truly idiotic statements, I will make an exception for former New Hampshire Tea Party Rep. Stella Tremblay. She stated that she did not believe Boston bombing victim Jeff Bauman lost both his legs as a result of this event ... She did apologize but never once mentioned Mr. Bauman by name. Please Google her name to read her entire statement and her apology.
I would again urge your writers to cite their information sources and also thank the Bluefield Daily Telegraph editor for the opportunity to write letters for publication to the newspaper.
