Congrats to winners; challenges await

— — Those of us that depend on Social Security and Medicare can rest easy now that the election is over. We will not have to worry about privatizing the programs that provide our social network.

West Virginians are noted for voting against their own interests and Mercer County is no exception. We voted for Mr. Snuffer to replace Rahall, thank God that did not happen, our King Cole Highway segment would never have been completed.

I would like to congratulate the winners of our two legislative races and sincerely hope they are able to meet the challenges of working successfully in a Legislature that is controlled by members of the Democratic Party. I hope they give high priority to U.S. 77 tolls and bringing in industries that will provide jobs that pay above minimum wage. I hope they will encourage vintage vehicle restoration, car shows and the many small business that support tourism. I also hope they will actively support the development of roads like the Shawnee Parkway that will provide easy access from U.S 77 and U.S. 64 to Bluestone State Park, Pipestem State Park, Camp Creek State Park and Pinnacle Rock State Park. West Virginia has a lot to offer.

Regardless of the political affiliation of those we elect our coal seams will not get any thicker and they will not get any easier to mine. Fracking is not an answer to our employment problems. My opinion is that the large energy corporations will get richer, West Virginia and the people of West Virginia will be given token notice and we will continue down the path that will be a refrain of the 1950s  “I will move to some large crowded city. In a northern factory town you will find me there” (Mary Black and Emmy Lou Harris, “Green Rolling Hills of West Virginia”).

On the bright side for members of the Democratic Party, we need to purge both our registration files and our poll workers files and get rid of our “token” members. We do not want to make hypocrites out of those who support other political parties.
