Saturday, May 25 was the inaugural race for the Bluefield Beaver 8K Run. The race was extremely successful but could not have happened without the cooperation and help from many people in this city. I would first like to thank my co-coordinator Mike Collins, principal at Bluefield High School. He was invaluable with the race route and the use of BHS.
Also, the city of Bluefield was extremely supportive of the race, Jim Ferguson, city manager and the board were supportive of the idea of revitalizing a race during the Memorial Day weekend. Mr. Ferguson was also very helpful with the organizing of the security of the route. I would like to thank the police department for directing traffic and ensuring the safety of the runners and the city transportation department for providing a shuttle from Mitchell Stadium back to Bluefield High School.
The organizers of the Mountain Festival were very generous to include the race in all advertising of the weekend, and the parks and recreation department for letting us end the race and have a fun run for the children at Mitchell Stadium. I also want to thank Memorial and Whitethorn Elementary PTO and Trinity United Methodist Church for providing water stations.
I particularly want to thank Josh Cline, director of economic development for the city, for running the time clock and putting up the time sheets. His help was invaluable.
This event will continue to be an annual event but could not be successful without the support of the city and its citizens. Thank you Bluefield for all our help, support and cooperation with the first Bluefield Beaver 8K Run. This race benefited Blessings in a Backpack and Bluefield High School Project Graduation.
