Clinic arrival great for local veterans

— — After losing my husband two years ago, a Vietnam veteran who served his country proudly as a U.S. Marine, I began writing letters and talking with legislators on health issues for our veterans; those who found it difficult to make the trip to Beckley whether due to physical or financial restraints.

I’ve worked with Al Hancock over the past two years on the issue of a clinic in the area. What an awesome day Feb. 13 is going to be for our veterans, the county and the region. My husband traveled to the VA in Beckley and I know he would be pleased with the arrival of the mobile clinic, a clinic that promises to bring top quality health care for Mercer County veterans and the region. With that said, our veterans must make use of the clinic or else we will lose it and probably never have another chance of getting it back; certainly not getting a stand-alone clinic in the county.

I encourage each and every veteran to make use of this valuable piece of medical technology. Our legislators listened and acted on our behalf, now it’s our turn. I extend my thanks to Senator Joe Manchin, Senator Jay Rockefeller, Congressman Nick Rahall, local legislators, the VA and all those who wrote letters and made phone calls regarding this issue.

It is my hope the parking lot at the Herb Sims Youth Center is packed full of veterans and citizens Feb. 13, at 11 a.m., that have come out to celebrate the long-awaited arrival of the clinic. I look forward to seeing you there! Don’t forget to thank a veteran.
