Police presence needed in west end

— Before I start let me say that I am not a spring chicken, far from it. I am of the age that I can remember a once great Bluefield.

The quality of life in Bluefield has gone downhill. We have a reactive city where we once had a proactive city. I don’t know if it’s because we don’t have the money to hire policemen and firemen or what.

We once had a police department that were involved in more than one thing. I can remember when the night shift, while on patrol, stopped at street lights that were out and called those numbers into headquarters to get them repaired. The police also stopped cars and trucks that had headlights and taillights out on vehicles. They stopped people with no mufflers or loud mufflers and gave tickets for defective equipment. We have cars parking on terraces and sidewalks and no one sees this violation of city code.

Then we have Bluefield Avenue. This is a disgrace that no one seems to care about. The prostitutes seem to have free rein on the avenue. I and some of my neighbors have reported this on numerous occasions and nothing is done.

I sit on my porch and watch these girls work and law enforcement is nowhere in sight. I have sat and watched for hours and you don’t see police patrolling this area. This I am not kidding about. It is rare but you may see a police car fly down the avenue going to a call. But as for a regular patrol, you just don’t see it.

We can radar on a modern four-lane highway but when it comes to the citizens in the west end we seem to pay city taxes for nothing. The city should do better.
