Independence had base in Christianity

— I would like to respond in part to the recent letter about how our founders felt about religion?

The quote, “as the Government of the United States of  America is not in any sense founded in the Christian religion ...” is not found in the original Arabic text of the 1796-1797 Treaty of Tripoli; but rather only in the 1797 English translation for some unknown reason. Also, in the 1805 treaty with Tripoli the same quote is absent.

The 1783 Treaty of Paris (also signed by John Adams), which ended the War for Independence and an 1822 ratification with the Emperor of Russia both begin with the words, “In the Name of the most Holy and undivided Trinity.” Also, on June 28,1813, John Adams wrote to Thomas Jefferson, “The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity.”
