Festival great, but many missed show

— — The 2014 Cole Chevy Mountain Festival just concluded a very successful week overall in our area. The activities began with the opening of the carnival on May 20 and the crowning of our Miss Cole Chevy Mountain Festival Queen and concluded seven days later with traditional Memorial Day programs all around the region. Kyle Hurt, festival chairman, along with dozens of volunteers and sponsors made this truly a memorable week.

Many hours go into planning and holding such an event. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, we are able to bring the festival to the area and make almost all of the entertainment acts free to the public. That is why it is particularly disappointing when events are poorly attended. The most glaring example of this was the concert on Thursday, May 22, by the United States Air Force Heritage of America Full Spectrum Band. This talented group of men and women are active duty Air Force personnel who have performed around the world entertaining our troops. Indeed, they just recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan. Sadly, fewer than 150 people showed up for their concert. Despite the small crowd, the band put on a great show. Those in attendance that evening enjoyed a first-class performance by first-class musicians and proud American servicemen and women. It is just too bad that so many of our citizens missed this great opportunity. Literally, hundreds of dollars were spent on advertising for the concert. The Bluefield Daily Telegraph was the lead sponsor and both L & L Broadcasting and WVVA welcomed the group with live performances.

As we move into summer, I encourage you to take advantage of all there is to offer in Four Seasons Country. Next time you think “there is nothing to do around here” just look out your back door. Don’t let another opportunity like the USAF Full Spectrum Band pass you by again.
