Don’t be bought with share of the booty

The Sen. Truman Chafin, D-Mingo, Sen. Bill Cole, R-Mercer, plan endorsed by the Telegraph is an attempt to alleviate harm from turnpike tolls to southern residents of the state while tacitly endorsing the toll system.

The Interstate was not designed as a toll system. Congress provided loopholes for West Virginia and several other states to avoid harming them by the planned construction. That was over half a century ago. Any toll collected on any portion of the interstate today is tantamount to highway robbery. It may be legal in the same sense that Hitler’s government took the property of Jews, but there is no moral justification.

I resent the implication that I can be bought off by a share of the booty. Government should be about what is right for everybody. Those who do not understand where greed leads should take a weekend and tour Detroit.
