Government helps in many ways

— — Smokey Shott in a recent article stated that government efforts to make our lives better nearly always fail. Was he talking about Social Security, Medicare and the G.I. Bill? How about the Tennessee Valley Authority, public roads and schools?

In Smokey’s world, there would be no government at all, which is called anarchy. We are now using less imported oil than 20 years ago. Ethanol production has helped agriculture.

Brazil has no problem at all with oil imports because most of the gasoline there comes from sugar cane, a crop they have an abundance of. If we followed Smokey’s ideas we would go back to buggies pulled by horses.
