Pits aggressive even with good owners

— — I dare say anybody who is interviewed by or writes to the Bluefield Daily Telegraph in response to a city proposal to ban pit bulls is a responsible pet owner who would never want his dog to harm a person or animal.

Over and over we read and hear it’s not the dog that is aggressive, it’s the pet owner who abuses the animal, making him a threat to society.

But consider this: in February, two pit bulls that have a very, very responsible owner who has a 6-foot fence surrounding her property to keep her seven dogs from escaping and possibly doing harm, saw her two pampered, young pit bulls jump her fence and maul a neighbor’s bulldog. Again, this is a dog-loving woman who would never, ever want any of her animals to do harm.

Therefore, people who consider pit bulls to be aggressive only if mistreated must concede that their love of the animal overrides the truth.

Do not say that it’s irresponsible owners, for a very, very responsible owner’s pit bulls who have been loved and pampered since birth did do harm — need I say, if not in school, my grandchildren could have been playing in the yard.

Are pit bulls a threat? Absolutely!

May the city do all it can to protect its citizens from all harm.
