Tolls should be dropped, not increased

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

I am very disappointed that we, again, are hearing that the tax to drive I-64/I-17 to Charleston, our state capital, may be increased. This will certainly create quite a discussion, but in my opinion, it is the wrong discussion. The discussion should be about when will this unfair tax be eliminated as has been promised for more than 50 years.

Back in the late 1940s-early 1950s we were promised that as soon as the bonds for the construction costs of the turnpike were paid the toll to travel the turnpike would be removed and that maintenance would be provided by general highway tax money just as for all other roads in West Virginia.

As has been pointed out many times in the last 20 years it is very unfair to the people of southern West Virginia that we have to pay highway user fees in the form of taxes for the construction and maintenance of every other highway in the state but a special tax, referred to as a toll, to maintain the portions of I-64/I-17 in our area to get to our state capital. The only debate that should take place about the tolls on the turnpike is “When will the tolls be eliminated?”
