Utility rate increases hurt everyone

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

I want to express my opinion about the utility companies in our area that continually ask for a rate increase. It seems we hear of one of the companies asking for this increase almost on a monthly basis.

It also seems that the most often used defense argument against the increases consist of always saying those on fixed incomes can’t withstand another increase. This is mainly targeted at the elderly.

I would be the first to say that our elder population needs to be protected at all cost, but I also think the Virginia State Corporation Commission is tired of hearing the same old argument.

Yes, the elderly are on a fixed income, but what about the rest of us who are on salaries who go to work everyday many times working overtime who are struggling to make it? It doesn’t matter how many more hours I work I bring home the same pay. I do earn compensatory time but that doesn’t heat my home or buy food. When you really think about it I am on a fixed income too.

The Telegraph has been reporting over the last few days that it is seeing middle-income individuals and families who are needing help with food, utilities, etc. I just think the town councils in the area need to include those of us who are in the above mentioned situation when they go to Richmond to defend us against the utility companies.

I urge everyone to contact their respective Commission about their opposition for the increases. If everyone would take five minutes to email or call that 800 number it can make a difference.
