Youngster helps find new home for husky

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

My name is Marie Otey and I live on Sandlick Road. I have a granddaughter who is 10 years old that lives with my husband, myself and our 12-year-old son. A couple of days ago, there was a huge Siberian Husky that came to our home and at first we thought it had got loose from its owner. Two days went by and still every morning, the dog would wait for our granddaughter, (Brooke) to come outside to catch the school bus.

We sent Brooke and her friend around the neighborhood asking if she belonged to them — same reply: no-one would claim her. Brooke has a Beagle so we knew we couldn’t keep her. The husky was going to have puppies and she desperately needed some care. At first I suggested that we call the Humane Society and Brooke cried about that idea. So my husband works at Keystone and he had talked to some of his fellow workers about the situation. One man told my husband that he lived on a farm and that he would take the husky and care for it. The husky loved Brooke cause she would play with it and love it and give it lots of attention.

On April 30 the time came to load up the husky and take it to the new owner. Brooke had to ride with the husky to keep her calm and show it love. We got her loaded about 6:30 a.m. and she was comfortable with the ride as long as Brooke was beside her. I told my husband that I would have to take Brooke to school late; but Brooke wanted to make sure that the husky was going to be alright.

Brooke and I arrived back home around 8:15 a.m. from Keystone. We gathered her school things and I took her to school. When we arrived at Glenwood School the secretary asked me why Brooke was late. I told her she would not believe this story. I explained the situation to her and then I asked her what I should write in the slot for reason of being late. She looked at me and smiled and said write the same thing that I wrote on her slip for her teacher — “animal rescue.”

Brooke said when she went to class, her teacher said that was the first excuse she had ever received like that. Then Brooke’s teacher asked Brooke if she would share her story with the rest of the class and she did.
