PHS plan demands a full explanation

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

I have written before with some suggestions about the consolidation of Pocahontas High School.

Since my letter there have been meetings and outrage throughout the county concerning the direction of the school board. I have not seen anything to support this decision except a 4-1 vote by the board.

I wrote Cookie Johnson and ask for information concerning what is spent per student in Pocahontas compared to the other high schools in Tazewell county. I also ask if Pocahontas school would remain open to middle or grade school. I did not even get an answer, so I will ask you the same.

I also brought up how important it would be to have the school board meeting at Pocahontas High.

The school board is accountable to the people of Tazewell county. Given the amount of letters being written and the uproar by the community, it would make sense to explain to the people just why such a decision can come to a vote. Decisions such as closing a 100-year-old high school need a complete explanation.

There are guidelines and rules that must be followed and explained to the community.

The school board has a great responsibility to oversee the education of every student in the county. A smaller enrollment in a high school has many more advantages than a large high school where most students do not know one another.

I do not need to go over all the reasons why this school should remain open. For the past weeks it is very plain how the community feels about the school board’s direction. Your position is to lead, not to allow chaos.

A vote should not even be allowed at the next meeting. The actions of the school board need to be explained to the community.

Now would be the time to bring the community together.

The decision to move the students to another school will have adverse effects on the entire community.
