Junior “Earl” Small
PRINCETON — Earl Small, 86, of Fair Grounds Road slipped quietly from this earthly world Friday, October 23, 2009 at Princeton Community Hospital.
Born in Bellwood, WVa. on November 7, 1922 to the late Robert and Grace Small, Earl was a veteran of World War II and worked as an electrical foreman for Semet-Salvey, Allied Chemical and A T Massey for 43 years having retired in 1984. He had lived in Mullens, W.Va. for many years where he helped organize the Boy Scouts of America where he served as leader. He also ran an appliance repair shop. He was a resident of Havaco, W.Va. for 28 years where he retired from Shannon-Pocahontas mines in Caples. He also organized McDowell County Rescure Squad, where he served as Captain of the Squad for several years. Earl had been a resident of Princeton since 1991.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Bobby and Clinton Small; sisters, Jacquline Small and Charlotte Morton; grandson, Ivan Earl Small; and granddaughter, Angela Dawn Schneider.
Survivors: Wife of 67 years, Nan Small of Princeton; son, James Small of Roanoke, Va.; daughters, Loleta Frye of Zepherhills, Fla., Elouise Holstein of Princeton, Nancy Mounts of High Point, N.C., Susan McKnew and husband Michael of Salem, Va.; grandchildren, Mark Schneider and wife Kathy of Malibu, Calif., Todd Schneider of New Castle, Del., Chelsea Small of Oklahoma City, Okla., Ann Holstein of Greenville, S.C., Corey Holstein of Princeton, Ronnie Johnson of High Point, N.C., Michael Johnson and wife Lorrie of Pfafftown, N.C., Deidre Martin, Emily McKnew, Marisa McKnew and Julie McKnew, all of Salem, Va.; brothers, Johnny Small and Roger Small and wife Judy Akron, Ohio, Jay Small and wife JoAnn of Mims, Fla., Oather “Buck” Small and wife Barbara of Mims, Fla. Earl also leaves behind 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; his ever faithful Dachy “Patty.” Left to cherish his memory are good friends and neighbors, Steve Arnold and wife Donna of Princeton; hunting buddies, Chester Johnson and wife Lois of Rockview, and Billy Johnson and wife Vicky of Peterstown.
Graveside services and Burial will be held Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from the Roselawn Memorial Gardens on the Courthouse Road in Princeton with Steve Arnold officiating. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton by 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
