Edwin O’Dell Thompson
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Edwin O’Dell Thompson, 80, died Monday, July 14, 2008 in North Fort Myers, Florida.
“Odell”, as he was known, was born June 11, 1928 in Princeton to Raleigh and Metta Davis Thompson. He graduated from Princeton High School and Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston), where he starred in basketball. He earned his master’s degree from West Virginia University. Odell served in Army Counterintelligence in Germany during the Korean War before beginning a 32-year career in education in Ohio.
He began as a high school teacher and coach in Apple Creek, Ohio, followed by six years as high school principal. He served for six years as Superintendent of Southeast Local Schools and then for 17 years as the Wayne County Superintendent of Schools in Wooster, Ohio.
Ed was active in the Apple Creek United Methodist Church and in Rotary and served several terms on the governing board of the Wooster Community Hospital. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, sports, friends, and family.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Miriam Thompson; son David of Beaverton, Oregon; son Steve, daughter-in-law Alison, and granddaughters Anne and Sarah of Laurel, Maryland; brother Curtis “Buck” and sister-in-law Pat Thompson of Wilmington, Delaware; sisters-in-law Evelyn and Stella Thompson of Princeton, and several nieces and nephews. Four brothers and three sisters died previously.
A memorial service will be held at the Apple Creek United Methodist Church on Aug. 9, 2008 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Apple Creek United Methodist Church, 269 West Main Street, Apple Creek, Ohio 44606, or to Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.
