TAZEWELL, Va. — Rees Bowen Royall, age 93, of Tazewell, Va. died Monday, July 21, 2008, at his home. Born September 19, 1914 in Tazewell, Va., he was a son of the late Senator J. Powell Royall, Sr. and Jennie Bowen Royall.
He attended the College of William & Mary and Bowling Green University. Mr. Royall was a lifetime member of Main Street United Methodist Church and a member of the Tazewell Rotary Club. He was a member of the Tazewell Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M., member of the Commandry, Kazim Temple, Roanoke, Va. and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Mr. Royal was a retired insurance agent, real estate broker and appraiser, along with coal interest including Bull Creek Coal and Clinical Coal. He originated a slogan for the Tazewell Chamber of Commerce “Tazewell Coal and Cattle Capital of the Commonwealth”.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel Litz Royall; an infant son, Rees Royall; four sisters, Chris Elmore, Rachel Royall, Jane Phlegar, and Ellen Story; three brothers, Powell Royall, Jr., Archer Royall, and Sam Royall.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother.
Survivors include his wife, Doris L. Royall and her son Douglas and wife, Linda, grandson, Robert Scott Hutchinson all of Tazewell, Va.; daughter, Jeanne Bowen Hillman and husband, Alan of Vero Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Kelly Bowen Musleh and husband, Victor of Ocala, Fla.; David Christian Harkness and wife, Amber of Alabaster, Ala., and Stephen Litz Harkness of Vero Beach, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Trey and Bowen Musleh, Andrew and Tate Harkness; brother, Edwin G. Royall and wife, Martha of Bluefield, W.Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008 at Main St. United Methodist Church in Tazewell, Va. with the Rev. Dr. Thomas A. Conley officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites will follow at the Jeffersonville Cemetery in Tazewell, Va.
The family will receive friends at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va. from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008 (today).
