Juvenile charged in Oct. 3 shooting turns himself in

BECKLEY — A 17-year-old juvenile wanted in connection with the Oct. 3 Hager Street shooting that injured one person turned himself in to the Beckley Police Monday afternoon.

David Thornton, the other shooting suspect, remains at large.

Detective M.G. Bragg said the juvenile went to the Beckley Police Department around 1 p.m. He was then arraigned before Magistrate Stephen Massie, who ordered that he be taken to a juvenile detention facility.

Beckley Police announced Thursday that they were searching for the juvenile and Thornton for their alleged involvement in the shooting of Jamar Panell Sr., 35. Bragg said Panell is in stable condition at a Charleston hospital.

Both the juvenile and Thornton are charged with malicious wounding, wanton endangerment and attempted first degree murder.

Bragg said Thornton could still be in the Beckley area. Anyone with information about Thornton’s location is asked to call Beckley Police Department at 304-256-1720 or Crime Stoppers at 304-255-STOP.

Police said they believe the Hager Street shooting was a result of an argument about the Sept. 26 shooting death of Shawn Rucker. The three men wanted for Rucker’s murder — Alfred Pittman, Corneallus “Ty” Taylor and Dewayne Lane — have been taken into custody and are lodged at Southern Regional Jail.
