In Botetourt County, police tell media outlets that a man died after he fell into a culvert near his home while trying to remove debris early Thursday morning.
The Virginia Department of Transportation says crews are working to clean up mud slides, repair flood damage and remove downed trees.
Mudslides closed about 5 miles of Route 221 in Roanoke County on Wednesday night. The highway reopened Thursday morning.
Salem city spokesman Mike Stevens says two mobile home parks were evacuated Wednesday night.
The National Weather Service says the Roanoke River is several feet above flood stage. The region received 2 to 5 inches of rain during a 24-hour period ending Thursday morning.
