BEDFORD, Va. —
The National D-Day Memorial plans to install a statue of a veteran who spearheaded the effort to establish the memorial.
The News & Advance reports that the memorial in Bedford launched a campaign on Monday to raise $100,000 for a statue of the late Bob Slaughter, along with a plaque.
Memorial officials plan to dedicate the statue on Memorial Day in 2014.
Slaughter died in 2012 at age 87. He was a D-Day veteran who was wounded twice in France.
Memorial Foundation president April Cheek-Messier says Slaughter’s determination led to the memorial’s creation.
Slaughter served as the foundation’s chairman from 1994 to 2001.
