MSHA issues 130 citations at mines in September

CHARLESTON —  Federal mining regulators issued 130 citations during September impact inspections.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration says it also issued 13 orders following inspections at nine coal mines and one other mine.

MSHA issued 25 citations and 13 orders at Red River Coal Co.’s No. 1 Prep Plant in Wise County, Va.

The mine operator was cited for failing to conduct adequate on-shift examinations and to record, report and correct hazardous conditions.

Mines in West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Colorado and Massachusetts also received citations.

The inspections began in 2010 after a mine explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia that killed 29 coal miners.

Since then MSHA has conducted 666 inspections and issued 11,133 citations and 1,031 orders.
