MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — The NAACP is asking the Justice Department to investigate the fatal shooting of a Virginia man by Martinsburg police officers.
Media outlets report that NAACP West Virginia chapter secretary James Tolbert and Jefferson County chapter president George Rutherford announced the group's request Wednesday during a news conference in Martinsburg.
Family members of 50-year-old Wayne Jones of Stephens City, Va., also attended the news conference. They say they want answers about Jones' death.
Police have said Jones was shot March 13 after he ignored orders to drop a knife he pulled on officers. One of the officers was stabbed.
West Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting. Berkeley County prosecutor Pamela Games-Neely says she doesn't know when the investigation will be completed or when autopsy results will be released.
