Former Va coal tipple converted to park, classroom

PENNINGTON GAP, Va. — An outdoor classroom and community park is opening this week on the site of a former coal tipple in Lee County.

The Stone Creek Outdoor Classroom and Community Park is located at the former Osborne Coal Tipple Yard between Pennington Gap and St. Charles. It has recreational trails and eight learning stations with interpretive signage.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports that a grand opening is set for Thursday.

The Upper Tennessee River Roundtable received funding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service about four years ago to buy the abandoned site. The Fish and Wildlife Service organized a stream bank stabilization project.

Keep Southwest Virginia Beautiful also was involved in the project, which cost a total $216,125.
