FAIRFAX, Va. —
Officials in Fairfax County are investigating three confirmed active tuberculosis cases at Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield.
About 430 families of students and staff members who may have been exposed to the infection disease have been sent letters offering free medical screening and are being asked to make an appointment. Testing will be available in the school gym Friday and early next week.
Tuberculosis is potentially deadly if not treated quickly. Patients with the active form of the infection are contagious and can spread the infection through coughing and sneezing. Officials say about 90 tuberculosis cases were identified in the county last year.
