W.Va. sheriff killing suspect seeks bail

HUNTINGTON —  A West Virginia man accused of gunning down a county sheriff is asking for bail ahead of his murder trial.

Defense lawyers for Tennis Melvin Maynard are seeking possible release terms at a Tuesday court hearing.

The 37-year-old faces a possible Oct. 21 trial date on murder and other charges in the April slaying of Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum.

Maynard is accused of fatally shooting Crum in a downtown Williamson parking lot. The sheriff was eating lunch in his police cruiser. Investigators say that after a brief vehicle chase, Maynard pulled a gun on a pursuing deputy who then shot and wounded Maynard.

A Mingo County grand jury indicted Maynard on murder, attempted first-degree murder and fleeing charges. Circuit Judge Paul Farrell has been appointed to handle the case.
