Celanese Corp. begins to modernize Va facility

NARROWS, Va — Celanese Corp. is beginning a project to modernize its Giles County plant.

The Dallas-based specialty materials and chemical products company broke ground Tuesday the clean-energy conversion project at the facility.

The company is replacing coal-fired boilers with natural gas-fired boilers at the plant in Narrows.

Celanese manufactures cellulose acetate products used in filtering and other industrial applications at the 74-year-old facility.

The Roanoke Times reports that Celanese will spend $150 million to shut down seven coal-fired boilers and replace them with six fueled by natural gas.

Officials say the change will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 35 percent annually.

The project will provide 150 jobs during construction and create 22 permanent positions once the new boilers are up and running.
